Experts say we spend approximately a third of our lives in the bedroom, so when it comes to your wellbeing and making a healthy impact on your lifestyle, the bedroom is a great place to start.

Creating healthier alternatives in this area of our home may come with a small investment initially, but in the long run it will increase your comfort and overall health, in addition to benefiting the environment.

1. Start with your pillows

Your pillows will accrue a lot of bacteria, so in addition to washing them regularly, it’s wise to invest in natural materials such as organic cotton, wool or natural latex. When the weather permits, air out your pillow in the sunlight to kill any hidden mould that may be growing.

2. The mattress matters

When it comes to buying a new mattress, consider one that’s made of natural materials. This may be linen, natural latex, organic cotton or wool. The latter is the best material for your mattress as it will absorb humidity very well and also insulate.

3. Healthy sheets

When it comes to choosing your bed sheets, it’s best to avoid dark cotton sheets as the darker the colour, the more chemicals have been utilised to fix the dye. Choosing sheets that are petroleum based polyster is also something you want to steer away from, in addition to no-iron sheets.

A better option for healthier bed sheets are ones made of natural fibres which are generated from environmentally friendly resources. When it’s warmer, sheets made out of bamboo, linen and organic cotton are ideal, and when it’s cold, organic flannel will work wonders.

4. Minimise dust

If you are an asthmatic, this step is particulary important. You should vacuum your mattress when you change your bed sheets to remove as much dust as possible. You can also protect your mattress with an allergy free cover that will prevent dust mites.

5. Stay fresh

Instead of using a chemical based air freshener, open your bedroom windows every day and use baking soda to neutralise and absorb the smells around your bedroom. Place the baking soda powder in a bowl and mix it with a small amount of water, then wipe over various surfaces.
